After-Shocks | A Poem by Casey Powers

he wears a costume
and plays his part well

changes quickly between scenes
and transitions effortlessly

sometimes he slips up his lines though
causing some confusion in the show

a brow might furrow when
realization dawns
that a performance is being witnessed
a mere performance

at some point
you were drawn in
from a bystander or the audience
to participate in the plot

this is not the man
only an actor

but by then it is too late
a black rose of hurt blooms
and then he crushes the petals with a grin

you will shudder after the initial quake
every time a thought of him calls for notice
until eventually after a decade they fade
