A Wave, a Smile, a Nice Hello | A Poem by Donal Mahoney

She was just an old lady
who lived next door.

I’d wave and smile
and give a nice hello

but nothing more.
Although she died

I see her still
in her backyard

feeding birds
and planting flowers

and I realize now
she deserved far more

than a wave, a smile
and a nice hello.
