Unwavering | A Poem by Blanca Alicia Garza

Six in the morning
The sun on my face
heralding the start
of a new day.
Feeling so empty, tired.
I need a cup of steaming
coffee to wake up.
Who is this woman
I do not recognize
reflected in the mirror?
The brightness of her
eyes has dimmed,
her smile now
just a sad grimace.
When I look into a mirror
I cannot see myself anymore,
I see a new me… perhaps
a little cold and hard,
with an unwavering heart;
But look deep into my eyes
and you will see my beautiful soul,
maybe dusty and cracked,
still worthy of love.
